Subject:[kgec_kalyani] My interview experience in TCS

      Hi everyone
I am writing my experience of TCS :

I took the test on 29 th August : went there at 8.45 am -- test started at
      10.25 -- finished at 12.25 -- result dclrd. within 1.5 hours --- 12 got
selected from our room of 42 people -- they gave us the famous BLUE FORM
-- completed it -- deleberately submitted it late so that I don't have the
interview on that day as I was not prepd. for the tech. interview -- was
in a casual dress -- plan worked -- my interview was scheduled on 9th
September 2.00 pm slot in TCS new building -- went there at 1.30 -- My
      tech.
interview lasted for about 15 minutes -- HR lasted for 7/8 minutes
--within 4.45 everything was over -- now writing in detail:

      Tech Interview :

      Interview Panel : 1 man , 2 lady

      man: M
      middle seated lady : ML
      right seated lady : RL

After my salutation they told me to sit

      RL : introduce ur self
at the same time M asked me to introduce ...

      I introduced ...

M: tell me something abt ur project in brief ...
I did -- was confident abt my project -- explained everything -- answered
      every questions

ML: do u know semiconductors ?
      I said yes

ML: what is inside the capacitor ?
said dielectric material ---may be air may be paper may be mica ...

ML: asked me does capacitor block DC ?
I said yes and explained why ...

ML: asked another q on capacitor ...
I said I am afraid I can recall it right now ..

ML: what is universal gate ?

( I mentioned in my blue form and in CV that Digital Logic and C as my
      fav. subject -- my project
was also on boolean function )

I said NAND,NOR and explained in detail why ...

      M:So why u r interested in software ?
I explained why in detail and said that after studying 4 years same
      B.tech course I see that a student from Comp.Sc/IT is getting 15/20 k
salary per month ... and a hardware engineer --- student of electronics is
getting only 3/4k sal. per month -- it is quite unacceptable
      M: U r absolutely correct Mr. Dipankar...

      RL: u wrote that u know C ... how do u grade urself in C ?
(her voice was so low that I had to ask twice to be able to listen to the
      question )
I said I am not an expert in C ,but not bad either ..

RL: do u know mathematical operators in C?
      I said yes...

RL: then find the logic to get the result of a/b without using '/'
      operator ...
I said it can be done with the help of bitwise operator ...

RL: write down the logic then
I realized that it can not be done using bitwise operator .. started
      thinking ...

RL : I can give u one clue ... the operands would be such that their would
      be no remainder ...
first I was clueless .. then I found out it was very simple -- I have to
just subtract a from b and count how many subtractions r there -- the
number of subtraction is the result ... I wrote down the logic ...

      M: explain it ..
      I did ... M and RL both satisfied ...

RL : u did this with the help of while loop ... what is the diff. between
while loop and do-while loop ?
      I answered .

M: what is the diff. between the variables u used in ur project and the
variables u handled in ur 12 class calculas mathematics ?
I said that variables in calculas can take any value and boolean variable
      can take only 0 and 1 ...

M: OK ur interview is over ... still I am asking u one question... what is
the field of study called in which u did ur project ...
      I said BOOLEAN ALGEBRA

M: OK u r right ... and it is also a part of discrete mathematics ...
I said it was in the syllabus of Comp. Sc/IT .. I never looked into the
syllabus of that topic ... I am not aware that BOOLEAN ALGEBRA is a part
      of discrete maths or not..

M: ok u may leave now

then I waited for another half an hour in the canteen .. we had to ask
them to know the result ... I told them my name and they said u cleared
      the tech .

then it was cool ... waited another 1/2 hour ... suddenly they called my
      name for HR interview ..

      HR panel : 1 person :P

      P: introduce ur self ..
what do u want to achieve ?
what is ur idea about software industry ?
      why TCS?
what if I ask u to write down a program on string reversal ?
      I said I can try ...
P: how a hexadecimal number is represented in C?
      answered ..
P: how 7FF is represented in the internal memory ?
      I answered ...
      P : what is AND operator ?
      I explained & and && both ...
P : ok then find out the result of bitwise and of 7FF and 1FD ?
      I answered ...
      P: so u know that ..
      I said yes...
      P: how can u multiply 2 or divide 2 without using * and / operator ?
I said it can be done with the help of leftshift bitwise op. and
      rightshift bitwise op.
P: ( smiling) did someone told u the answer before ?
I said no Sir, I read it from Rithie ...
P: do u know abot the bond?
      I said yes ...
P: and there will be a medical test if u get selected ...
      I said I know that ...
      P : do u have any mobility problem ?
      I said no Sir.
      P : anywhere in the world ?
      no problem Sir.
      P : if I put in Chilli ..
      no problem Sir.
P: what is the capital of Chilli ?
this is the time I flanked and could not tell him some country name of
North American region ... he gave some clue but I went totally
blank ... nothing was coming to my brain at that moment ...
P: you should know what country is in which part of the world ...etc...
      P: do u have any questions ?
i said I heard that the training in TCS is the best in the industry? what
      they teach to the
      newcomer in TCS ?
      P: answered ...
I asked whether TCS is planning a venture on hardware market or not ?
P: no but cmc is doing that --- not manufacturing hardware products but
      supporting them ...etc....
when can I expect to hear from U Sir?
      P: answered...
      P : nice meeting u Mr.Dipankar.
thank u Sir, left the conference room ...

I think I should not have asked the last question ... that was also a
mistake ... I don't know what is going to happen ...Now I am awaiting
results ... nothing is in my hand any more and I am praying to God ... If
I am not selected this time I guess its bad luck for me and also bad luck
      for TCS...
